JACK SCHULTZ
WSGA PLAYER OF THE YEAR
hat a season 2011 was for 21-year-old
Jack Schultz. Schultz, a member of the
University of Michigan golf team and the
2010 Big Ten freshman of the year, didn’t
play many amateur events in Wisconsin
during the summer season, but he made
the most of his opportunities when he did
compete.
Schultz, who plays out of Fire Ridge GC
in Grafton, came up big in the Wisconsin
State Golf Association’s two marquee
state championships, the WSGA Match
Play Championship, sponsored by Taylor-Made, in June and the WSGA State Amateur Championship, played in July.
Schultz came from behid to earn the
Match Play title on the 19th hole at the
Links at Grand Geneva in Lake Geneva
over Ricky Hearden of Horseshoe Bay GC
in Egg Harbor. Schultz was 2-down to
Hearden on the 17th tee, but won the
17th and 18th to force extra holes, then
birdied the 19th for the title.
Schultz also had a prime opportunity in
July to win the State Amateur at Maple
Bluff CC in Madison. He earned a spot in
the final pairing with a round of 66 in the
third round, before a final-round 73
dropped him into a tie for second. He
then missed a 4-foot birdie putt on
18 that would have forced a
playoff with eventual winner
Mike McDonald of Blackstone
Creek GC in Germantown.
W
Schultz also medaled twice in 2011
United States Golf Association qualifiers.
He shot 141 on Aug. 1 at Milwaukee CC
to earn a spot in the U.S. Amateur Championship at Erin Hills in Erin, but shot 73-
73–146 in the stroke play rounds there
and failed to reach the match play portion
of the tournament.
Schultz earned his other USGA berth at
Mark Bemowski
KETTLE MORAINE GC
WSGA SENIOR
‘11
Washington County GC in Hartford on
June 6, where he shot 143 in U.S. Amateur Public Links qualifying. He tied for
27th in qualifying (77-71–148) at the
championship before losing in the third
round of match play.
In all, Schultz amassed 1,220 points dur-
ing the 2011 season. In second place was
Paul Jacobsen of The Racine CC, with 828
points. Robert Gregorski of
North Shore GC in Menasha
was third with 691 points. For
