To everything, to borrow from the
Byrds and the Bible, there is a season.
In Wisconsin, golf actually gets three,
and very different seasons they are.
Spring golf is all about high hopes and
expectation; summer golf slaps hope
into the deep grass and expectations
to the wind, ever reminding us we play
this game at its whims and not ours.
rounds that must warm us through the
long Wisconsin winter until naive hope
can be born again.
But fall golf – ah, fall golf – is a game
to be savored because these are the
Fall golf’s positive attributes are well-
known: most courses are in peak
condition, once-a-year tourist golfers
are back to their day jobs and mostly
serious players are left to play. At least
for a time, the trees delight with their
Technicolor finest, and just as rates are
often lowered, so are expectations.
