New interpretation on DQs
‘Modern phenomenon’ causes rules bodies to act
he United States Golf Association
and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of
St. Andrews recently announced a revi-
sion to the way the Rules of Golf will
be interpreted. The revision
to Decision 33-7/4.5 will
allow players in some situ-
ations to avoid disqualifi-
cation from competitions
when they have signed in-
correct scorecards.
The revision follows
some high-profile
disqualifications of
professional play-
ers after television
viewers reported
infractions
they saw on
golf telecasts.
Thus, Mike
Davis, the
USGA’s new executive director, called the
issue “a mod-

non,” which has come to the fore be-
cause so many viewers now have high-
definition televisions and slow-motion
video capabilities.
